Second Wind Tunnel Testing: Another Milestone for AVATAR

June, 20, 2025 | PROJECT NEWS

The AVATAR project has reached a significant new milestone with the successful completion of its second round of wind tunnel testing at Imperial College London, as part of the EU-funded initiative.

Building on findings from the initial campaign, this phase focused on validating AVATAR’s innovative printed track technology and its in-house data acquisition (DAQ) system. A major achievement was the successful installation and operation of the flexible printed tracks, developed and manufactured by the Danish Technological Institute. These tracks form the foundation of the project’s envisioned “sensing skin” for future aerospace applications.

The testing team included Ilias Giannakeas, Prof. Zahra Sharif Khodaei, and Yuhang Pao from Imperial College London, Shengkai Guo from Loughborough University, and Markus Snælundur Skovhus from Nordic Wing. Together, they conducted a comprehensive series of aerodynamic tests on the ASTERO composite wings.

This round of testing marks a key step forward in demonstrating the robustness and potential of AVATAR’s core technologies, paving the way for future development and integration.
